The Foundation's first major initiative was to campaign globally for the protection of the lands of the Kayapo Indians in Brazilian Amazonia. This resulted in 1993 in the legal recognition and demarcation of an area of more than 17,000 square miles as the Menkragnoti Indigenous Area.

Asia 2008

INDONESIA:
  • Reforming the legal framework for forest management in the country. It represents an ambitious attempt to obtain necessary reform of the legal framework for forests in Indonesia, the country which presently holds the world record in annual deforestation. The project aims at empowering local communities through paralegal training, spreading information on forest management and human rights, lobbying policy makers. PAPUA NEW GUINEA:

  •  Forest law enforcement and governance. It is a continuation of funding from the last two years that brought some success in the first phase of the legal battle for having the logging permits in East Awin and Kamulo Doso concessions revoked or declared invalid. The project is to continue financing the legal battle of the two court cases. Project monitored by Rainforest Foundation Norway.
