The Foundation’s first major initiative was to campaign globally for the protection of the lands of the Kayapo Indians in Brazilian Amazonia. This resulted in 1993 in the legal recognition and demarcation of an area of more than 17,000 square miles as the Menkragnoti Indigenous Area.

Africa

In 2008  Rainforest Foundation Fund will continue supporting the work of Rainforest Foundation UK in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon through a portfolio of projects, which represents a mixture of the policy and lobbying work that the organization has been delivering to great effect in past years together with some consolidation of practical projects which will back up the policy work with a solid community base.

2007 Projects

AFRICA CAMEROON - Improving forest communities inclusion in management of and access to forest resources. Working to ensure the recognition of forest peoples in forest revenue sharing and to develop  a long term plan for improvement of community benefits from  sustainable forest resource use.

CONGO BRAZZAVILLE - Securing rights for Pygmy communities. Part of a longer term project its aims are the promotion of human rights, peace and the rule of law, contributing to the elaboration of  laws which conform to international norms.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - Inclusive Management  of Protected areas. Aims at ensuring equitable access to and control  of natural resources through the recognition of community and  indigenous rights in new nature conservation law.

EASTERN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - Reflect empowerment and literacy training for indigenous communities.  The project aims at contributing to the empowerment of Indigenous TWA and MBUTI Pygmies to direct and control their own development.

GABON- Forest Policy Monitoring and Lobbying. The project intends to ensure that forest policy respects the rights of communities living in and around the forest.

KENYA - Mapping of Cherangany Hill Indigenous Forests. The  project has the specific objective of supporting the Sengwer people of the Kapolet forest to negotiate over the proposed destruction of their community lands by the construction of a dam.

UGANDA- Promoting the Role of Civil Society Organizations in  the Forest Sector. By strengthening the capacity of Ugandan civil  society and forest dependent communities to effectively engage in and influence the forestry policy and decision making processes end reforms.
